Before she died, she received a visit from someone close to her heart, and it was enough to reduce her to tears. Now, the visitor recalls their last visit with the former First Lady.

Carter is survived by four children, eleven grandchildren, and her sister, Lillian Smith-Wall. Carter's other siblings, brothers Murray and Jerrold, passed away twenty years ago.

Carter was the oldest of her four siblings, followed by her two brothers and then Smith-Wall. Wall was named after a local nurse, and she and Carter had a special bond as the eldest and youngest siblings in the household.

As the eldest sibling, Carter stepped into a mothering role and helped raise her siblings. By the time she had turned 13 and her father had died, Carter said:

When Carter turned 96 in August, her sister paid her a visit to mark the occasion. She remarked that she thought her older sister had outlived all of the women in their family on her 96th birthday.

Carter's sister brought a special gift, too: a photo of the former First Lady with her father. When her sister handed her the present, she said:

"That's my daddy."

She then put her hand over her heart and told her sister it was the best gift she had ever received as she teared up. Smith-Wall said she felt proud of her sister and that she loved her very much and wished her a happy 96th birthday.
